Chairman Mao
Leaves His Stretcher to the Soilder
In the early days of the Long March, when Mao was recovering from a serious illness, the organization made a stretcher and mounted it for him.
But he rarely used the stretcher, and he offered it either to sick guards or soldiers with frozen feet.
Mounts are offered to secretaries, guards, handymen take turns to use.
When crossing the Chishui River, guard Huang Zejiu dropped out because of a stomachache.
Mao left the stretcher to him at once, and he and his soldiers marched 100 li in the night.
Though very tired, they told jokes and encouraged the soldiers along the way.
One day, the Red Army came to the foot of the snow mountain, confidential secretary Huang Youfeng suddenly caught malaria, and had a high fever.
Mao personally found the medical staff to give him medicine and treatment, and let him lie on a stretcher, repeatedly encouraging him to persist.
But Mao himself was leaning on a walking stick, facing the biting wind, step by step sliding toward the snow-covered mountains.
Huang lay on a warm stretcher, looking at Mao's struggling figure, moving to tears.
